4 players is completely possible. I've played TMNT and Simpsons straight through to the end with 4 players. Ditto with other four and three player games.

Haven't tried the 5 or 8 player games yet, but I don't know if Mame is even setup with controls for more than four players...

Hey Kurgan, they're talking about Gens games :)

Mega Bomberman is the best 4 players games for Gens to play online, but there is a very good game too: Yuyu Hakusho!

Gens doesn't have much 4 players games like mame does... :(

Ohh, There's a 8 players games for Gens. It's a hacked bomberman. If there's a "more than 2 players games" for Gens that I didn't write, please reply. 8)

Oop, my bad!

Yes, I have played Gens games with four players online before and it works.

I've played Mega Bomberman with four players (I suck at all the bomberman games, period, though they are fun. Likewise I've played that four player war game by Electronic Arts (the name escapes me at the moment, but it was that cartoony game with the red & blue infantry dudes fighting each other).

I've seen the 8 Player Bomberman Demo, but it seems only four of the 8 are controllable (at least messing around with gens offline). I've never tried it online before. As far as I know that's the only Genesis game that's more than four players. At least that I've ever heard of...

To revise my statement about Mame, there is one working 6 player game (Hard Dunk & its clone), and one 8 player game (Sprint 8 and its clone "Sprint 8 tag & chase"). There are 215 (not including clones) 4 player games (181 listed as working). 51 three player games (not including clones) with 44 of those listed as "working." And of course 1,822 2 player games listed as "working" (not including clones). A tiny fraction of these are one on one fighters. ; )

The Sega Genesis didn't have too many four player games (most consoles didn't and still don't), unfortunately. There was EA's "Four Way Play" that was only compatible with EA games, and the "Team Player" put out by Sega that only worked with Sega Games. Finally an adapter was released that worked with both types of games, but that caused some confusion there. Also there was a series of games called "J-Carts" that had extra control ports on the cartridge itself (I don't know if this has been emulated yet by any genesis emulator) so you didn't need to buy any adaptors to play with four players.

I don't know all the J-Cart titles (they were all sports games though), but here's the other ones I remember:

That military game (sorry forget the title)
Mega Bomberman
some tennis game
NBA Jam (of course!)
NBA Jam for the Sega-CD (slightly different stats and tweaks)
NBA Jam: TE for the genesis
NBA Jam: TE for the 32X (better graphics and some tweaks and new stats)
Gauntlet 4

There may be another couple of games I'm forgetting (most likely sports titles), but those are the ones I remember, and of course that 8 player bomberman demo, but that wasn't publically released that I know of, we're just lucky somebody dumped the cart for emulation. ; )

As for how it would have worked, I'm sure the original cartridge accepted input from two Sega Team Players (or EA Four Way Player's) connected at once, since each one used only one control port to plug in.

The Adapter that fit both has two ports and takes up both ports, but theoretically you could just unplug one of them and use two of the special adapters (sorry, I forget if sega released the new adaptor or not, I own it, but it's in a different city from where I am now).

PS: Never heard of Yuyu Hakusho! (hope it doesn't require knowledge of Japanese), but I'll check it out, thanks!

Thanks Kurgan for the infos! (I'll look for those games)

We forgot Fifa series! :o , I've played Fifa games a lot.

You are right about Bomberman 8 players Demo (only four of the 8 are controllable). It's a Gens limitation, if someone can modify Gens source code (it's open source)... 8)

Of course they do.

All the "one on one" fighters that list more than 2 players work like this:

First two players control the first two fighters. When you switch characters (as you can do in many of these games) another human player takes control of the new character that was switched to. Switch back and you get the other player back.

It'd be like if you were playing hotseat at the arcade every time you switched characters. This isn't so odd, because on the Dreamcast this was how Marvel Vs. Capcom handled 4 player mode.

It's not for everyone, but it can be fun.

I think by default though, player 1 & 2 are on the "left hand side" on the "same team."

But the host admin can swap the order of the players, so if you mess around you can get it how you want it, say with an odd number of players.

Hi, I've downloaded a full catelogue of mega drive roms and I have these bomber man verions

Mega Bomberman - 8 Player Demo (JUE)
Mega Bomberman - 8 Player Demo (JUE) [a1]
Mega Bomberman - 8 Player Demo (JUE) [h1]
Mega Bomberman (JUE) [!]
Mega Bomberman (JUE) [a1][!]

Could anyone tell me whats the different between a1 and h1 and [!] ?

I also have a few different versions of pete sampras tennis as well

Pete Sampras Tennis (E) (J-Cart) [c][!]
Pete Sampras Tennis (JUE) [x]

I'm guessing the one with the J cart in the file name is the one which has j cart emulated so 4 plays can play ?

Thanks
In advance Nick

(E) = European Version

(U) = US Version

(!) = Good r0m Dump

I hope that helps !

h stands for "hack" or "hacked" (with protection removed, added trainers or modified game), the "a" I am not positive but could be "alternate dump" or maybe "alternate version" (such as a bug fix or modified game released by the original company).

B = stands usually for "beta" but might also be "bootleg" (doubtful).

JUE = Japanese, USA, European (or JEU)

That refers to a game that has the code for all three regions in it. Usually it was like a simple switch that toggled between them on the same cartridge (not accessible to the owner of the cartridge without a special modification done to their cartridge slot of course). Later Genesis games had this removed, with protection and (I assume) released wholly seperate versions to prevent people buying (possibly cheaper) imported games and playing them on converters or playing them early this way.
