Confused with Kaillera and newer MAMEs...

Postby ant » Sat Jun 26, 2010 10:05 pm

Hi!

Yesterday, I notice there were newer/updated versions of MAME that work with old Kaillera like Mame32K (got it to work, but I can't read asian characters with its netplay interface) and MAME Plus! Plus Kaillera (MPPK) from http://www.emucr.com/search?q=kaillera (emucr.com is cool!).

MPPK is pretty good, but I can't find anyone to play old arcade games with like Gauntlet 2. I only care about the games from 1980s/80s and early 1990s/90s since I am old fart! I also had problems connecting to servers. It seems like non-US servers block me since I am in USA. I finally connected to an US (West Virgina?) server, but everyone seems to play Super Smash Bros. :(

Ugh. Is it me or is it hard to find anyone to play with? Or am I doing this all wrong? Or am I supposed to use the old versions of MAME and its ROMs (I keep mine updated for every major versions like v0.138).

Thank you in advance. :)

It's always been hard to find people to play with.

Seems like most Kaillera users fall into a few categories:

1) Kids (I say "kids" because they act hyper and immature... for all I know they are in their late 30's) who only want to play a handful of "recent" popular games (usually the VS. fighters like Marvel Vs. Capcom, but mostly King of Fighters 98+ and Street Fighter Alpha 2), to a lesser extent Super Smash Bros. on the N64 and Winning Eleven (Soccer game) on the PSX.

2) People who think that .64 was the greatest thing since sliced bread and a holy icon that must never be tampered with (ironically most of them use a "Hacked to support more games" version of .64). Apparently they do this because of #1 and because they use ANCIENT computers.

3) Excitable young gamers who don't speak a word of english (if you're lucky, they can say the "F" word at you).

4) Old school gamers that like games besides VS. Fighters and once popular N64 titles, that may even be bothered to download games they haven't played before, in order to try them out with people online.

#4 has always been rare. I remember back in the day, when CPS2 was first cracked and supported by Kaillera, all anyone ever wanted to play was Dungeons and Dragons. Then when D&D 2 was supported, all they wanted to play was that (even though the game was unstable and crashed before you could win it). Now with auto save you can complete it and the popularity has dried up. But if you want to play nowadays, people seem to just sit around waiting to challenge you to King of Fighters or SFA2 or Smash Bros.

If you don't want to play only those games, it's hard. I feel your pain! The best thing is to just get contact with somebody ahead of time, go to the server together and just play. Trying to convince people to join you is usually just a waste of time.

Oh yeah, and let me say while I have NOT tested them online with people myself, the latest Mame32K builds (that aren't posted on this site but are available from EMUCR and perhaps some foreign sites) are being REPORTED to have bad online play. I don't know if this just means they're slow or if they have desynchs more than usual. But it sounds as if you might want to stick with the latest "official" build for now.

What really matters are the multiplayer games supported, and I'm not sure what games are in these new builds that you couldn't play before in a playable fashion already in the latest build. Perhaps you can help me on that one (and if they're console games like the NES or Genesis ones, you'd be better off playing those on a dedicated console emulator with online support anyway).

I haven't tried the online system of KEGA Fusion or ZSNES, but I hear they are their own system (not kaillera).

Ah interesting. That's a bummer about the online for old arcade games (MAME). I remember how awesome it was when Kaillera was new. :(

Hello Kurgan. Are people STILL using Kailler for MAME 0.64???? Holy poop. Talk about stubborn to the bone. I personally think the reason ant is having trouble finding people to play with is simple....99% of them have moved on to GGPO. GGPO has made some impressive strides over the last few months, and of course its netcode is second to none. You should see the amount of people that play KOF 98 and 2000 on a daily basis....it's ridiculous. I just wish ggpo. well, FBA actually, supported the same amount of games that MAME does.

By the way Kurgan...who is actually in charge of Kaillera these days? Also, when was the last time you or anyone you know heard from Christophe? I wonder if Chris has ANY interest in the project anymore. Not holding my breath

GGPO, eh? Interesting. Will I be able to find people playing old arcade MAME games from the 1980s/80s, or will I still have the same problem with Kaillera?

ggpo has quite a few cool games, ant. Check them out. The netcode is second to none and there is very little lag most of the time. It's a much more enjoyable experience due to its wonderful netcode. On the downside, the selection of games is nowhere NEAR as large as in MAME. We're talking around 30 or so games in ggpo compared to mame's 8000 or so. So that's a bummer. But it does have the essentials, such as Final Fight, Street Fighter series(yes of the 2D ones), Marvel vs Capcom, Sam Shodown 2, 4, 5, Last Blade, Puzzle Fighter, KOF98/2002, Dungeons and Dragons SoM, and a bunch more.

Check it out and see how you like it. It's still a fairly new program but it's growning everyday.

Ah thanks. Is there a list of games? I was unable to find one. I will wait for its game to grow. :)
