Psuedo "2-Player Mode" in MAME Games Played on Kai

Postby Master O » Wed Jul 12, 2006 5:55 pm

I notice that certain arcade games, like Pacman (Midway) and Arkanoid (both World and Japan), say that they are 2 player games, albeit where each player has a separate turn at eating ghosts/breaking blocks.

However, when you try to play them online, only player 1 can play the game, and not any subsequent players who are connected to player 1 when it's their turns to play. Is this because the original arcade machines for these games only had 1 joystick, and not 2 joysticks on the same machine? As a result, when Kaillera's netplay code tries to find player 2's controls, its fails to do so, resulting in player 2's not having controls?

I don't know if the above is necessarily a bug in Kaillera's netplay code, but does that mean that said games would need to have mods similar to Marvel vs Capcom's "4 Players for Kaillera," so that 2 players can play in the same game, albeit separately, since those 2 games make both players play separately?

Just an interesting observation I noted...

Ok then.

How ever no one answered the last part of my question:

Does that mean that said games would need to have mods similar to Marvel vs Capcom's "4 Players for Kaillera," so that 2 players can play in the same game, albeit separately, since those 2 games make both players play separately?

Can I assume that's a yes?

yes

In emulators, those games are handled separately.

For example, on a 4 player mvsc game, if there are 8 players in total (4 playing and 4 spectating), kaillera client always gives the emulator key frame values from all 8 players at 60 fps. There are extra code in emulator which checks for which player is on and it utilizes data from that player's spot. Perhaps something like, if button 3 and 6 are pressed without any directional keys by the active odd player and the value of a certain sram address is something for a perticular game then control goes to next odd player. I'm sure its smarter than what i tried to say and I've never bothered trying to play 4 players mvsc with 8 players or played 4 players mvsc more than twice.
