I know that this has been debated to death, but I was wondering what you guys recommend and why?

Please post your system specs.

My specs:
P4 1.6 Willy o/c'ed to 2000 mhz
Asus P4b533 mobo
GeForce 3 64mb
256mb pc2100 ddram

You should have made an poll :)

Intel = faster , more powerful and more expensive than AMD

AMD = not as fast or powerful as Intel but enough bang the money you pay. Unfortunately, it also runs hotter than an Intel chip.
You either END GAME or you don't play the game at all!!!

i thought intel was better until i saw at most webpage benchmarks that people use amd mostly to test things like videocards, i asked myself...why??
benchmarks showed better performance with amd than intel, i thought at first instance that people used a trick or things like that to make amd look better,

but i decided to made by myself a personal test, and now i definitely agree with these people.

for example, an amd athlon 1000mhz is faster than a pentium4 1.4 ghz at rendering images on 3d programs like 3dsmax, after rendering some images, the amd showed to be about averaged 2 seconds faster than the p4, and even faster rendering different things, now testing games p4 was faster than that athlon as it should be since it´s 400mhz faster than the amd. (using same video card and pc specs of course)

now i compared a p4 1.60 ghz with same athlon 1000mhz and the rendering times where equal for most images, others were rendered little faster on the amd prossesor. but games of course were faster on the p4 since it´s 600mhz faster.

finally i could test equal prosessors: athlon 1700+ and a p4 1700, games were same performance i noticed, but at rendering, the amd was still better, much better, also i read amd use to be more stable than pentium p4 for this kind of heavy apllications.

then, i conclude:

amd is as good as intel for games but much better for heavy applications,(according to many testing websites, amd is even better than intel for gamming), cheaper and stable( i really didn´t notice any overheat problems, maybe that was related to older amd processors).

intel si weaker for heavy aplications, as good as amd for gamming, more expensive

i definitely would recomend AMD

give AMD a point for the poll.

i must agree. AMD is much better. Only downside is you're asking to die if you try to overclock an AMD (::comes back home and sees comp on fire::)

I decided on my P4 cos of stability..... i was put off by those overheating rumours of the athlon.

i bought a p4 because i thought price would make the difference between quality ( you know, low price stuff use to be worse quality ) but amd is not affected by that rule , also that overheating thing is now just that: a rumour.
if you buy the proper fan kit, you should not have problems with overheating

AMD is known to be better at a set CPU speed against intel but there are a few drawback and they are:
1)The fastest AMD is much slower then the fastest intel out there
2)AMD has this issue of making econo-chips which are CPUs that are missing something that emulation can make up
3)Most programs are specificly made for intel and will run slower on AMD
You guys can keep going but thats all I can think up now

what programs you meant to be slower on amd? can you give some examples?
and where did you get that info from?

qwertymk, on number two, EXCUSE ME, I DONT THINK SO.

That's all I have to say.

As far as Pentium optimized, look to Quake 3-based games for that. Medal of Honor is one of them.

Mystiq, what I'm saying is that AMD could make their chips better even then it is but they focus on making it cheap just so that they'll have more money in their pockets, I still think AMD is way better but just keep in mind that the companys that make networking can offerd to give every1 a dsl connection for, lets just say very very cheap, and yet they'd rather make money so they change $40 for it and AMD to a smaller degree does the same thing
Keep in mind that I'd take AMD over intel any day just dont think that they're God's gift to CPUs

AMD made their chips for cheapness a few years back but now it's all about speed. Get your facts straight. There's a new Athlon core coming out soon that's gonna bump it passed the current P4.

I must say that Intel is more stable and much better. AMD is good too but, Intel has been "A, around longer. B, the leader in the market of microprocessors. C, the over clocking issue." I feel Intel is way better, thats my opinion. -BTS
