PROBLEM: Open source means many forks. Many forks mean incompatibilies. Incompatibilities means no one can play with anyone else.

But sure, I'd be interested.

OKai and Kaillera++

Postby anthem » Fri Jan 16, 2004 1:58 am

Hey all, I was actually rather surprised to get Berserker's email today, but also pleased.

It seems we approached the same goal from two different ends. I started by reverse engineering the existing protocol, and he began with designing his own. We've planned to join forces and combine our work to produce the Kaillera protocol and client/server that we both are aiming for.

We hope to create a client and server that uses its own (better) protocol, but still work with the existing Kaillera clients and servers, to ease the transition between the previous and new protocols, and to provide an alternative for applications that may already work just fine with the existing protocol.

Thanks for all the offers for help. We may be able to use it when we're ready to start public testing (which may or may not be soon). We'll keep you informed.

:) Finally, some hope to upgrade online arcade games. I hope you guys the best of luck in making your own client. I think that you guys should just focus on getting the client to work as perfect as you guys for now and then once you guys get it working, then we can start thinking of ideas for the client, for example, ladders, tournies, banning people is a must, better flood control and more.

when you guys get a beta of your client, maybe i could help you guys by testing the software with a 56k connection which i use and maybe i can give you guys feedback and such.

Good luck u 2.

I stickied this post.

I wish you guys the best of luck. In fact, if you need someplace to host the files (non tripod BS) let me know.

mojob cool beans, I know Christophe will think its neat.

Just 1question though ..

Will you be implementing your own tracker? I think you should not use kaillera's tracker as a start. Here's my explaination why...

Mystiq once said something about there being too many kaillera versions out there if the source was opened up. This would hold true if they all used the same tracker.

However..

If your DLL was coded to use its own tracker, then it would help to "granulate" out the versions to a per tracker basis. You could still remain "Kaillera Compatible"

Anyways, if you want to run your own tracker, I have a very good hosting account over at <a href="http://he.net">hurricane electric</a>, and would gladly host the tracker to get you guys going. I know the kaillera tracker is just some cgi scripts, maybe I can figure out how to write one for you.

Contest Announcement & Status

Postby anthem » Fri Jan 16, 2004 10:05 pm

Hey guys, Berserker and I have made a few decisions we'd like to share with you.

First, we've decided to change the project's name. The original idea was to somehow merge the names OKai and Kaillera++, but that's proving difficult, so we're having a name and logo contest.

The deadline is a week from today: 23 January, 2004, at midnight, eastern standard time. Post your entries here (if you have no place to host a logo, contact either Berserker or myself, and we'll handle it). If many of you decide a week isn't long enough, we'll extend the deadline, but it will only be extended once.

You can submit a logo, a name, or both. If the winning name/logo doesn't have a corresponding logo/name, we may have a second contest.

We've also decided that we'll release a demo client in the near future, so you can see where we are, and what you can expect. It will be compatible with existing Kaillera-enabled programs, but will support better synchronization.

W4RH34D: We appreciate your hosting offer. I'll contact you soon to ask about details.

toqer: We appreciate your offer, too, and agree with your point about keeping the trackers separate. If you'd like to implement our tracker system, you're welcome to. We'll let you know about tracker hosting.

Thanks again for all your enthusiasm and support.

For the love of all things holy, please do not use DirectPlay. There is who knows how many layers upon layers of API calls you need to use which is easily outstripped by properly-written plain old API code. My point? More latency than there would be in the original Kaillera.

I don't think anyone needs to worry about us mixing ourselves up in the horrors of DirectPlay, but thanks for your concern.

We can't promise anything yet to modem users, but I will say that we'll do our best to accomodate you and improve the overall situation. But there's only so much we can do, and a lot of it will also depend on the particular emulator. If your favorite emulator decides to send an inordinate amount of data, well, we can't do a whole lot about it.

Just as long as kawaks runs as smooth as it does today. If its any worse than it is now, then that will be a big let down.
