I don't really care about the "social thing."
The last thing I'd want as I'm having a competative match with somebody is to be interrupted by somebody's chat text.
That's like somebody talking to you while you're trying to do your golf swing!
If you know the person doesn't care if you talk to them while they're fighting (and how are they going to chat back), no big deal, but most of the time you don't know and you're intruding.
The way to solve this problem is to not have chat, but rather voice channels.
You can already use voice chat for virtually anything via teamspeak or ventrillo. No chat text, you won't be visually distracted and you can talk back without worry. Plus if you don't like it you can just mute.
I would think that most people who are ALREADY PLAYING would be annoyed, making it but a small benefit to the small minority of people who would find it useful.
Chat with people before the game and after, or if you have to, with the people you're actually playing... just say no to outsiders jumping in to yap at the people playing.
I mean maybe in a TURN BASED GAME you could chat or something, but most games people play online aren't like that, leaving very little room to have a conversation with a third party who isn't part of the action.
You're entitled to your opinion as well, but I'm saying that there instances where you'd use it are far smaller than the instances where it would be a nuisance or ripe for abuse. If such a feature was available I think most people would turn it off if given a choice and they knew how.
if the only person who can leap into games to chat with players is the Admin, then it's not a "social thing" it's just the admin checking on people and possibly throwing his weight around. Rather pointless.
I mean, is the admin making an important announcement or just so bored that he or she has to intrude into people's games to talk to them in the hopes that they'll talk back (or be banned? what happens if they ignore him/her?).
